Habits to improve your sleep
Neck and/or back pain? Are you sleeping well?
Most people suffer from pain and go to the doctor to treat their ailments. What they don't know is that these ailments can be avoided with good sleep. We spend a large part of our lives sleeping, so we need to find ways to do it properly so that it doesn't affect our daily lives.
Sleeping properly helps detoxify, reduce inflammation, and revitalize the body. However, many habits must be incorporated to achieve restful sleep. It's about developing habits and consistently practicing each one. Many of the tips are basic, but you must be consistent to see changes in the short term.
Avoid stimulants before bed
Eliminate alcohol, caffeine, or any other substances that stimulate the brain. Sometimes we think these have no effect on our sleep. Although it may seem like we are resting, the reality is that stimulants prevent the body from reaching a state of deep sleep.
Develop a sleep routine
Yes, we know, it sounds boring. But remember, we're like clockwork, and if we prepare our bodies to sleep at the same time every day, it will be much easier to induce sleep. Your goal should be to get your body used to sleeping at the same time.
Evaluate your surroundings
Although you might think it's irrelevant, the atmosphere matters. Both temperature and lighting are elements you should consider. Does your room smell nice? Is it tidy? Strive to have a clean space conducive to total relaxation.
Be careful with your posture
Avoid bending your neck or putting too much weight on one side. We want to achieve balance, and the best way to do that is by sleeping on your back. If you have any aches or pains, use pillows to your advantage; for neck pain, you can use a cervical pillow, for knee pain, you can place a pillow under your legs, and so on.
Does your mattress fit your body?
It's recommended to use a firm mattress to provide adequate support for your body while you sleep. However, everyone is different, and comfort levels can vary from person to person. The important thing is that it's stable to prevent movement while you sleep. Also, if your mattress is sagging or more than 10 years old, it's time to replace it.
Additional tips
Induce sleep with chamomile or lavender tea.
Do a relaxing activity such as reading, writing, listening to music and/or doing breathing exercises.
Avoid using the bed for other types of activities; remember that we should associate the bed only with rest in order to fall asleep faster.
