How to choose your mattress painlessly
Almost every day in my practice, someone asks me, "Doctor, what kind of mattress should I buy?" It is a very simple question and yet the answer can be quite complex. There are many qualities and characteristics of a mattress that must be taken into account to choose the one that best suits your body and lifestyle. After all, you will spend a third of your life lying in this wonderful piece of foam, fabric and spring equipment, so you must choose wisely.
In this article, I will try to share my wisdom regarding selecting a good mattress. To do this, you have to take into account basic aspects such as your body type, your temperature tolerance or internal thermostats. Additionally, you have to consider any sleep conditions you may have. And this, without mentioning an important line: your budget. Finally, you should think about whether you will sleep alone or with someone else. You should answer all of these questions before you pull the trigger and purchase a particular mattress.
As a general rule, I am very reluctant to recommend a particular mattress to any individual. This is because, after many years of experience, I have learned that a good mattress for one person may be a terrible mattress for another. So how do you begin the process of choosing the perfect mattress?
Well, first, you have to go to a showroom and the service you receive there must be excellent. The person who is guiding you in the store must have extensive knowledge about their products and must be very patient and give you your space when you are trying the different mattress models. Therefore, when you decide to test a mattress, I always recommend that you take at least five deep breaths in each sleeping position. I encourage you to do this even by yourself, without other distractions. Consider that the quality of your sleep can determine everything from your libido to your weight control. And sleep is really related to all the functions of our being. In fact, it is currently known that there is no health function that is not affected by the quality of your sleep. Therefore, take your time to rest on the mattress, try different positions, etc. What's more, bring your partner along for the experience.
On the other hand, if you have problems with temperature, I always recommend a mattress that has a gel that allows it to cool down. In Puerto Rico, which has a very tropical and warm climate, it is best to choose a cool, light and comfortable mattress. Remember that you can always add more sheets or blankets if you want to increase the heat. But, yes, avoid warm or very dense materials, as these will keep you overheated during the night. So, since after purchasing that type of mattress, you cannot alter the core material, opt for something fresh. A general rule of thumb is to choose a gel or hybrid mattress that will keep you cool at night.
The second most important aspect to consider is the firmness of a mattress. I'm a big proponent of firm mattresses. However, some people cannot tolerate them due to some underlying conditions. This is why I always suggest people have their spine checked by a qualified chiropractor while choosing their mattress or preferably before choosing the mattress. This will help uncover any conditions that may affect sleep quality regarding the mattress before making such an investment. In fact, chiropractors are well known for being experts in this field. So choose one and don't hesitate to ask if the mattress you are interested in is right for you. And, if possible, try to go for the firmest you can tolerate. Keep in mind that you can always add a soft surface to the mattress.
Finally, the third most important aspect of purchasing a mattress is the price. In warranty, the price is very important. And don't be fooled by expensive mattresses. I have realized that the perfect mattress does not necessarily have to be the most expensive mattress on the market. Additionally, a good healthy manufacturer's warranty is always appreciated, as it can sometimes take you one to two weeks to discover if your mattress is ideal. Ask the seller about the warranty and possible scenarios. For example, what are the shipping costs and what is the manufacturer's warranty versus the store's warranty or what is the warranty for defects or wear and tear.
I have found Global Mattress to be very welcoming and accommodating to all kinds of special requests when it comes to their mattresses. They will do everything they can to make sure you are satisfied with your purchase and will support you in the future so that you become a very happy customer.
